Why Your Blood Sugar Matters

Why does your blood sugar matter?

If you’re not diabetic its likely you don’t really think about what’s going on with your blood sugar much.  But when your blood sugar is off it can affect more things than you might realize.

I knew I had blood sugar issues, because I suffered from pretty severe hypoglycemia (“low blood sugar”), but what I didn’t know was how much that affected so many areas of my life.

I had no idea that my blood sugar played a role in why I struggled with my weight, or why I had awful periods, or that it was why I barely had the energy to get through the day.  I also didn’t know it played a big role my anxiety and depression.  It was also the reason I was ALWAYS hungry and fighting off crazy sugar cravings.

When you balance your blood sugar you might see changes in:

Fat loss – when you’re no longer riding the blood sugar roller coaster you will lower your insulin levels which allows you to burn fat.  Insulin is our fat storage hormone so when it is too high, too often you will be in fat storage mode more often too.  Getting your blood sugar under control can help with fat loss.

Less cravings- when blood sugar is elevated, insulin kicks in to take care of it.  If it causes your sugar to drop too low too fast – you experience that “crash”.  That crash sends you into the craving zone as your body searches for more quick energy.

When you have steady blood sugar levels and your body relearns how to run on fats – you know longer need to rely on eating to get more fuel – your body can tap into its own stored body fat instead!

More stable energy – when your blood sugar is controlled and you don’t have to deal with frequent crashes all day long – you no longer have to hit the vending machine to get more energy.  Your body fat is a very efficient readily available fuel source.

Better mood – Blood sugar highs and lows can wreak havoc on your mood, increasing anxiety, irritability and impatience.  When you stabilize you blood sugar it can do a lot to help improve mood.

Balanced Hormones – Our hormones all work together. When one is off (like insulin due to high blood sugar) it can throw off your other hormones as well.  When you blood sugar is controlled you can see improvements in things like PMS, PCOS and heavy painful periods as well.
