5 Ways That You Can Improve Insulin Sensitivity

If you’ve been told that you are insulin resistant this doesn’t mean that weight loss is impossible.  There are some things that you can do to improve your insulin sensitivity.

And luckily most of them aren’t all that hard.

Get your ZZZs – sleep is so important to give your body a chance to rest, repair and recover – when we are sleeping there is really so much going on in our body’s to help them run properly.

When you don’t get enough sleep it becomes a big stressor on your body.  That stress increases your cortisol, which increases your blood sugar as well.  To help improve insulin sensitivity aim to get 7-10 hours every night.

Get active - Exercise helps to deplete the glucose stores in your muscles, which helps to improve insulin sensitivity by providing more storage capacity for glucose.

Even something as simple as going for a short walk before or just after a meal may help improve insulin sensitivity.  You don’t have to kill it in the gym every day (for some that can actually be counterproductive), but try to find ways to add activity to your day.  Its about time spent being less sedentary.

Manage stress – most of us can’t completely get rid of stress but there are ways to manage how it shows up in your body to minimize the effect that it has.  Try to find ways to decompress.

Some suggestions are meditation or breath work, gentle yoga or if your like me you might find a good cardio kickboxing class is just the ticket to work those stress hormones out of my body.

Focus on protein and limit carbs – protein is the most satiating macro so you may find by making protein the focus of your meal that you are less hungry less often.  Carbs have the biggest impact on our blood sugar so reducing them and allowing your body to be able to tap into your body fat stores instead can be a big step in improving insulin sensitivity.

Avoid seed oils -  (like canola, soybean, safflower etc).  These oils do a number on our body and can be a big driver of inflammation as well as affecting our body’s ability to burn body fat – making us more reliant on carbs for energy.
